How to protect your personal information online

How to protect your personal information online?

So how do you protect your data? For starters, remember to share only what is truly necessary. Before you provide any information, consider whether it is necessary – as much as 83% of data leaks are due to publishing unnecessary details.

It’s always a good idea to read the privacy policy before registering for a service – you’ll find out how your data will be used and by whom. Also remember to create really strong passwords – the longer and more varied, the better. Use alternating upper and lower case letters, numbers and special characters. It is good practice to use a unique password for each service.

Effective ways to protect your data online:

  • use strong and unique passwords for different accounts,
  • enable two-factor authentication (e.g., SMS code),
  • check that the website uses a secure HTTPS connection,
  • limit unnecessary permissions of applications installed on the device,
  • use encryption software like VeraCrypt or built-in system solutions.

If you use public Wi-Fi, connecting through a VPN significantly increases security. A VPN hides your IP address and encrypts data transmitted over the network. Browsing in incognito mode further enhances privacy because activity is not recorded in your browser history.

It is also worthwhile:

  • regularly check account login history,
  • keep track of suspicious activity that may indicate an attempted identity theft,
  • avoid clicking on unknown links without verifying them first,
  • do not open attachments from unknown sources,
  • verify email addresses and sender numbers, especially for messages of an urgent nature.

Be alert to messages with “urgent” requests – offices and banks do not request sensitive data in this way.

If you suspect that your data has been compromised:

  1. immediately change passwords to all accounts,
  2. report the incident to the service administrator,
  3. contact the Data Protection Authority, if necessary,
  4. monitor bank account transactions,
  5. if necessary, reserve your PESEL number.

In your daily life, it’s also a good idea to develop good data protection habits:

  • regularly update operating systems and applications,
  • back up your data on external drives or in the cloud,
  • expand your knowledge of cyber security,
  • install ad blockers and tools to limit online tracking,
  • consciously manage your privacy settings on browsers and websites.

When taking care of your online privacy, remember that it is not a one-time activity, but an ongoing process. Implementing even a few of these simple rules can significantly increase the security of your data and protect you from unpleasant consequences.
